Candidates must have good knowledge of Ancient Rome and Italy, eagerness for teaching undergraduates, and enthusiasm for participating flexibly in “The Ancient City,” the program’s core, team-taught course led by the Centro’s 2027-2028 Professor-in-Charge, Amy Russell, which combines archaeology, history, topography, literature, and epigraphy. They also must be eager to teach a course of their own design in either intermediate or advanced-level Greek or Latin that will appeal to the Centro’s diverse range of students. “The Ancient City” course will likely include three extended fieldtrips each semester: two of these trips will feature sites around the Bay of Naples and the third will focus on the ancient sites of Sicily. Accordingly, candidates should note their experience (if any) in those regions. Basic competence in spoken Italian is desirable but not required. Because full participation in off-campus excursions for “The Ancient City” course is an essential function of this position, candidates must be able to traverse various types of terrain, including steep slopes and uneven ground, for significant distances, in addition to safely leading students through public transportation systems. The Managing Committee is especially interested in candidates with established careers for appointment to advanced assistant or associate rank; we often appoint one assistant/associate professor whose interests and experience are primarily in material/visual culture and one whose interests and experience are primarily textual, and we especially value candidates with teaching competence in both areas.
The Intercollegiate Center does not provide H-1B or other immigration case sponsorship. Those hired must already be legally able to work for an American organization.
A cover letter detailing specific qualifications, a curriculum vitae, and (separately) two letters of recommendation, should be sent electronically ONLY to: The Administrative and Recruiting Assistant, Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome; assist@TheCentroRome.org.
Candidates should submit all application materials to arrive on or before November 15. Virtual interviews will be scheduled for December with follow-up interviews for select candidates in early January. The Intercollegiate Center is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia.

The Resident Instructor resides at the Centro with the students enrolled in the program; background or previous experience with students in a similar environment should be noted in the application. Basic competence in spoken Italian is desirable but not required. Preference will be given to qualified applicants who have passed their doctoral qualifying examinations but are not planning to finish the dissertation during the ICCS teaching year.

Candidates must be eager to teach undergraduates in a uniquely immersive, intensive, and collaborative environment that combines traditional classroom teaching with on-site instruction at museums and archaeological sites. They should have strong knowledge of ancient Rome and Greek and Roman Italy and should demonstrate an enthusiastic capacity for leading faculty colleagues in designing and implementing the program’s team-taught core course, “The Ancient City,” which combines archaeology, history, topography, literature, and epigraphy.
